在復育槽中自在悠游的動物，叫做墨西哥鈍口螈，是墨西哥的特有種生物。現在科學家與保育團體則在努力透過養殖與棲地復育，希望有一天重新讓野生墨西哥鈍口螈在首都墨西哥城現蹤。
Santuario Ajolote復育計畫領袖 Michel Balam：「Our objective is to one day reintroduce Mexican axolotl back into its habitat. We arrived at Xochimilco six years ago,the association started working four years ago
to what detect the main problems in the wetland so we can propose solutions in order to solve them. so we can propose solutions in order to solve them.（我們的目的是，希望有一天讓墨西哥鈍口螈重回棲地，我們六年前來到Xochimilco協會，則是四年前開始研究這片溼地碰到的問題，希望能提出解決方案。）」
墨西哥鈍口螈是少數成長過程中不會經歷變態的兩棲類，在整個生命週期中始終維持蝌蚪一般的身體型態。而更令科學家著迷的，是墨西哥鈍口螈的強大再生能力，身體的器官受到傷害或切除，幾乎都能再生，讓許多科學家投身研究背後的生物學原理，希望可以在醫學中應用。
Chapultepec動物園野生動物保育主任 Fernando Gual：「They are one of the few animals that can regenerate their skin, muscles, bones, blood vessels, nerves, heart, brain… This has attracted the attention of human beings and these mechanisms have been studied because one day through these genomic techniques we will be able to use these characteristics （axolotl’s regeneration capacities）.（牠們是少數幾個皮膚、肌肉、骨頭、血管、神經、心臟、大腦…都能再生的動物，吸引到人類的注意，研究這些機制，因為有一天透過基因技術，我們也能利用這樣的能力。）」
但即使擁有強大的再生能力，墨西哥鈍口螈遭遇水汙染與棲地破壞，也是難以招架。墨西哥鈍口螈本來分布就不廣，只限於墨西哥少數幾個淡水湖泊。位在首都墨西哥城南部郊區的Xochimilco，因為保存了殖民前時代的運河系統，一直到21世紀初期都還有墨西哥鈍口螈出沒，但近年來已經幾乎沒有觀察到個體。保育計畫科學家認為，該地區已經不再適合墨西哥鈍口螈生存，現在即使將養殖的個體野放，也沒有辦法建立穩定族群。
Santuario Ajolote復育計畫領袖 Michel Balam：「Let’s say the four main reasons behind the axolotl extinction are first the bad government management in the natural protected area. This bad management has led to the pollution of the wetland’s water, that has in turn caused urban growth and the introduction of species that aren’t native to Xochimilco. These problems, multi-factorial problems, make the reintroduction （of axolotls back into the canals） impossible.（墨西哥鈍口螈絕跡有四大原因，首先就是政府管理自然保護區失當，造成濕地水汙染、城市擴張、外來種入侵等問題，這樣多因素的問題，讓我們現在不可能野放鈍口螈。）」
復育計畫除了進行墨西哥鈍口螈養殖，保存基因庫，也在努力推廣低成本濾水器，希望改善排入濕地的水質，另外也推廣生態旅遊，喚起公眾對保育的意識，希望能進一步促成政府改變政策，讓棲地可以恢復。保育專家強調，墨西哥鈍口螈是富有特色、受人喜愛的物種，能夠吸引大眾注意力，重視整體濕地保育議題。

The axolotl, whose numbers have lowered over the years, is part of the Chinampas （wetlands） environment and their wonderful biodiversity in Mexico City. Axolotl conservation deserves all of our attention, but as part of their ecosystem. We consider the axolotl like a Chinampa （wetlands） ambassador. （Their conservation） is the consequence of the conservation of the Chinampas, an incredible and diverse natural protected area.（所有物種都有存在的意義，近年來數量下降的墨西哥鈍口螈，是濕地生態系的一環，也是墨西哥城生物多樣性的一部分，墨西哥鈍口螈保育值得我們重視，但是整個生態系都很重要，我們認為牠們像是濕地的大使保育牠們，就需要保育整個濕地，這樣一個美麗多元的自然保護區。）」
在阿茲提克神話中，火與閃電之神Xolotl為了逃避遭到獻祭，曾經變身為墨西哥鈍口螈，而在殖民時代後，牠們的特殊形象，也仍然深植墨西哥人的心中。也因此，墨西哥鈍口螈如果能在原棲地復育成功，也是富有象徵意義的一項成就。
墨西哥鈍口螈養殖場總經理 Josefina Gonzalez：「Why do we do it？ So we don’t lose something that belongs to Mexico and Xochimlico. You won’t find axolotls anywhere else, only here in Mexico. Its habitat are the Xochimilco canals.（我們為什麼要做這件事？因為不想要失去一個屬於墨西哥與Xochimlico的東西，墨西哥鈍口螈別的地方找不到，只有墨西哥有，棲地就是在Xochimilco的運河中。）」
